Tarot Tips

Getting Aquainted with your cards

When you first receive a new deck of tarot cards establish a connection with them. First, don't keep them in the box. Instead use something special. A scarf made of a natural fiber is preferable. Usually silk is customary because of its higher vibration. You might also want to get a natural fiber bag for your cards. Velvet and silk tarot bags can often be purchased in metaphysical stores.

Handle your cards often to get your energy on them. Hold them, shuffle them, lay them out and look at them. If you like you can do a little ceremony to consecrate them. Make them yours. Empower them. Treat your cards with respect and appreciation as you would a friend or guide.

Familiarize yourself with the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. Take out the Major Arcana cards and lay them out in order numerically from 0-21. Your cards will come with a booklet explaining each card. Next lay out Ace through 10 of each of the suits. Then finally lay out the court cards.

Another way to acqaint yourself with the cards is to give yourself a daily reading. I suggest starting with one card. Shuffle the cards and ask for higher guidance for the day. You can fan the cards face down and pick one. Or you can hold the whole deck face down and cut them. Then pull the card off from the top of the deck and lay it down face up so that you can view the picture.

Don't worry about reversed cards. Many tarot readers do not even use them. Before looking up a meaning note your first impression of the card. What feeling does it evoke? Does it remind you of anything? Describe the card. Are there any figures and if so what is going on? Use your imagination. Pretend you are a figure in the scene. What are you doing? Does it relate to anything in your life? Record your impressions in a journal then look up the meaning. This exercise will help you develop your intuition as well as establish a stronger connection to the meanings of the cards. It's okay if your impressions differ from the meanings in a book. The meanings are just guidelines. Allow the pictures and symbols to stimulate your creativity, imagination and intuition.

When you record your reading in a journal be sure and date it so that you can refer to it later. At the end of the day think about your card in relation to the day's events. Refer to the notes in your journal to see if you have any other insights into your reading. Most importantly have fun with the process. Let Tarot bring a sense of magic and wonder into your life.
